Ball by Ball Live Score Commentary

End of Over No.20 Chennai Super Kings 157/5 Last Over (20 runs)

10:24pm And that closes our coverage tonight. Thanks for joining and see you tomorrow!

Priyam Garg: I felt very good in there, because it’s a big stage with senior players. I wasn’t thinking too much, just playing my natural game. I think the best thing is the team management backed me after I failed in the first game. The plan was to play my shots and their bowling helped. I’ve batted with Abhishek throughout my childhood so it was easy. There’s a positive energy in the field too after such an innings. My self-belief has grown too after such an innings.

Priyam Garg is the Man of the Match.

David Warner: I backed him. I had no option. With Khaleel there, with five balls to bowl, we tried to kill the game there. Could have given it to Abhishek, but I felt with his height and how he bowled, I’d go with him. This wicket was a little bit bad as compared to the last one we played here. You don’t really get that length to pull. It was good to see a bit of swing early on. It was nice to see our guys back themselves – that was my message to these youngsters. I said it in my press conference – when these guys don’t get opportunity to bat time, it’s going to be difficult for them. I asked them what they thought was a good total, they said 150, we got 160-170. [Bowling at the death] These guys work really hard, 20 minutes at the start is these guys executing yorkers, length and slower balls. We work on that, executing those skills when we need to.

Rashid Khan: Good to be back in form, bowling good areas. That’s what these wickets require, wicket to wicket, short of a length. To be honest I never think about wickets. I’m just focusing on my economy. I bowled my first over for one run, the next over Samad got a wicket. I was happy with my figures. I think batsmen don’t go big shots unless I bowl lose deliveries. I’m trying my best to minimise loose deliveries. The time will come when I’ll take wickets as well. I think the ability the young guys have, they tried their best to deliver after working hard in training. It’s a good thing for the team that the youngsters excuted. Samad is a strong hitter of the ball and he delivered with the ball. He was so relaxed, so calm. That’s what I like about him. When the captain told him he’ll bowl the last over, he was smiling. He tried his best to give 100%. You need to be in the middle, keep smiling and enjoying bowling. That’s what I do as well.

MS Dhoni: I was not able to middle a lot of deliveries, maybe trying to hit the ball too hard. Looking at the outfield, it was subconscious. I’m alright, the throat starts to get dry in these sort of conditions. Long time back, we may or may not have lost three in a row. We have to get a lot of things right. It’s the professionalism – dropping catches, bowling no-balls. We’re making the same mistakes again. After the 16th over, we had two bad overs. Overall we could have been slightly better. Nobody wants to drop catches, but at this level you have to draw a line that these catches have to be taken. Catches like these can really hamper your knockout stage games. What if this was a knockout game? There are plenty of positives in this game. A few areas to improve and we’ll come back stronger.

sriram vaithian: “Dhoni talking about no balls and catch drops – when the target is just 165 runs to get. He and Jadeja took the required rate from 10 to 20 and then just slogging few balls at the end after match is gone. Same pattern repeating every match. “
Tasmeem: “Two matches CSK got close, but in reality lost the match before the halfway mark. They need to do some serious thinking about their batting and death bowling before long. Otherwise, for the first time they might find themselves outside the playoffs.”

Tanmay : “Yeaahhhhhhh that’s the young man Samad”
Graham: “These guys know more than me, but surely that left it two overs late with the aggression”
Aravind: “It is upsetting to see csk not being able to take advantage of and hurdle opposition faces. Definitely don’t deserve a place in this year’s playoff”
Benjie: “Haaaa….if they had gone for it earlier…they wouldve won..only have themselves to blame for this!!!”
Prasu: “CSK seriously Wasting S.Curran’s excellent hitting form.”
Adarsh: “SRH were previously heavily dependent on their overseas stars (Warner, Bairstow, Williamson, Rashid). Good to see the Indian youngsters contributing immensely to this win.”

10:02pm Sunrisers take it by 7 runs after a pretty dramatic last two overs. CSK backed themselves to get 78 off the last four overs. They’ve got 71. Mind you, one of that invovled Abdul Samad – who is already living a dream – to do something he’s probably never even dared to dream; defend runs in the last over against Dhoni. He went for 20, but his three overs prior for 21 were so so crucial tonight. An unfortunate end to Bhuvneshwar’s night is probably what brought the match this deep in the first place, but Sunrisers had done more than enough. And it was a win built purely on their youngsters’ efforts – Priyam Garg, Abhishek Sharma and Abdul Samad were all over this game with bat, ball and field. What confidence this team must take now that these guys are coming to the fore. For CSK, the batting effort seemed like more of the same. Not a lot of boundaries in their powerplay, hardly any in the middle overs, and yet again they left themselves too much to do. They sink further down at the bottom of the table.

19.6 6 Abdul Samad to Curran good length outside off, steps out and crunches it over the bowler’s head SIX
19.5 1 Abdul Samad to Dhoni along the floor to long-on. Full on middle stump, attempted slog down to the fielder there with no danger 1 run
19.4 1 Abdul Samad to Curran full and flat outside off, steps out and swings for it. It’s off the thick inside edge to deep midwicket’s right 1 run

Curran has to hit two sixes to keep CSK in the game. 16 off 3. Samad around the wicket.

19.3 1 Abdul Samad to Dhoni front of the hand. Good length and outside off. He slices it, an attempted pull, and it’s only a single at long-on 1 run

Bowling coach Muralitharan wants Samad to rip it off the pitch instead of lobbing it

19.2 4 Abdul Samad to Dhoni drills it straight through the bowler. Tossed up at off stump, helicoptered back at the bowler, who can barely react as this whistles between him and the stumps FOUR

21 off 5 balls. Third man, point, cover are in. So is fine leg.

19.1 2 Abdul Samad to Dhoni tossed up at off stump, steps out but he can barely have a swing at this. It trickles to long-on’s left and he comes back for the second 2 runs

Dhoni is struggling again. Bloodshot eyes.

19.1 5 Abdul Samad to Dhoni oh this is a disastrous start for SRH! It’s not terrible bowling, to be honest. Slips a length ball down leg side as Dhoni steps out at him. Bairstow loses his footing as he looks to go for that down leg side and he misses it. And it dribbles past all the fielders 5 wides

Dhoni has the strike for the last over. They need 28. Abdul Samad will bowl the over. Dhoni gets a change of bat. One dot ball, is what Samad might be thinking. Just one dot ball…

End of Over No.19 Chennai Super Kings 137/5 Last Over (16 runs)
18.6 1 Ahmed to Dhoni good length, slower ball on off stump. Mistimed slog dragged to long-on 1 run

Another six here, and….

18.5 6 Ahmed to Dhoni slapped over the midwicket boundary! Slower short ball sitting nicely up for him and he has slaughtered that off the front foot! It’s down to 29 off 7. Warner is disgusted with that last ball SIX

Dhoni is winded. Drops the bat and signals for the physio. Exhaustion> Dehydration? He made a gesture to Curran that could’ve meant he feels like he’s about to throw up. Getting a lot of fluids now. Has his helmet back on and now his gloves. He’ll go on.

18.4 2 Ahmed to Dhoni slower short ball cutting across middle. Miscued pull lobbed into vacant midwicket 2 runs

And now Dhoni is taking a moment trying to regain his breath. And is now on the ground. Was clutching the back of his right thigh. But is back on his feet.

18.3 2 Ahmed to Dhoni mistimed slog in front of long-on. Another cutter, at a good length and he can’t get the slog away. Sliced over the bowler 2 runs
18.2 4 Ahmed to Dhoni oh that is a terrible misfield at deep midwicket. Samad, who might now have to carry that into the last over as a bowler! Slower length ball had been dragged to Samad’s left. It was not menacing by any means, he just…let it through after making the ground FOUR

uh-oh, has Bhuvi tripped pulled up in his run up. He has a slight hobble after pulling out of his action. He’s stretching at the top of the mark…and attempting to run in again…but he’s pulled up again. Left thigh. That’s unfortunate, because anyone who’s followed his career knows this is a recurring issue. Muscular. He is able to walk around, so it’s probably a deeper issue than a cramp. The medical staff is out. He’s getting strapping around his left thigh. So it appears the plan is he’ll attempt to finish this over. He’s trying to simulate his run up. He can’t do it. Gets to the crease, stops again. And now he’ll hobble off. Will they go Samad or Khaleel? The gamble on the regular bowler to give someone like Samad 30 to defend? Yes. Khaleel will bowl the last five balls of this over. Seems like the most prudent choice. He’s over the wicket.

18.1 1 Kumar to Curran yorker to start. And a good one at leg stump. No swinging room for Curran, who can only get it off the toe-end to deep midwicket 1 run
End of Over No.18 Chennai Super Kings 121/5 Last Over (19 runs)

19 off that. Two fewer than was required at the start of the over. They need 44 off the last two overs. Bhuvneshwar has the ball and the responsibility to give Khaleel enough of a padding for the last over. After a big discussion with Warner, fine leg has been called into the circle. Does that mean he’s going yorkers?

17.6 1 Natarajan to Curran low full toss on leg stump, flicked straight to deep backward square 1 run
17.5 6 Natarajan to Curran hooks his first ball into the first tier! WOW. Some talent to be able to hit that first up. Short ball in the corridor. He shuffles and walks straight into the line. That is quite a heave. 86 metres! SIX

Sam Curran has joined Dhoni. CSK didn’t cross over, so he’s on strike

17.4 W Natarajan to Jadeja picks Samad out at deep backward square! Oh he watched that so closely into his hands. Short ball at middle stump, on the front foot to pull. Samad doesn’t have to move a lot. Makes a strong base, brings out the reverse cup and holds on. Camera cuts to Muralitharan in the dugout mouthing “good catch” as he looks sheepishly at the people around him OUT
RA Jadeja c Abdul Samad b Natarajan 50 (35b 5×4 2×6) SR: 142.85

Bharath: “@Abhijato Its not the plan. He tried to force some shots but he is not getting them . They need Tewatia type of innings now”

17.3 6 Natarajan to Jadeja swiped over the square leg boundary! For his fifty. Attempted yorker is a friendly full toss on the pads and he helps it over the boundary with the angle. His first ever T20 fifty SIX
17.2 2 Natarajan to Jadeja nails the yorker but they have two. In at leg stump, he managed to squeeze it between long-on and deep midwicket 2 runs
17.1 4 Natarajan to Jadeja dropped and helped along to the long-off boundary. Manish Pandey the man running back from mid-off. It was a yorker at middle, he was looking to slog that. Ended up slicing it. Pandey went back and to his right and lunged. Only managed to push it backwards in the end, wasn’t easy FOUR

Abhijato: “Dhoni knows a lotttt more cricket than me, but this just seems like terrible planning to me …”

End of Over No.17 Chennai Super Kings 102/4 Last Over (15 runs)

The medical staff is tending to Khaleel. Stretching his hamstrings, so probably no muscular damage. The ball jammed between his right thigh and the turf. Maybe a bruise. He’s on his feet again. He’s probably bowling the 20th over tonight. Natarajan to bowl the 18th. Had such a good game the other night at the death. 63 off 18.

16.6 1 Kumar to Jadeja just about stopped at short third. Good length and just outside off, late cut between backward point and short third. Khaleel dives to his left and manages to stop with his body but he’s grimacing and he’s stayed on the floor, holding what looks like his right knee. Did he slip and end up seating that knee on the ball? 1 run
16.5 0 Kumar to Jadeja beats him. Slower ball, good and just outside off. Gets the front leg into the leg side and tries to chop towards third man no run

Brendan: “I know Dhoni is a legend but I see way too many of these types of innings. What good is hitting a ball “watchfully back to the bowler” when you need 20 an over?”

16.4 2 Kumar to Jadeja legcutter at a good length, cramping him as he backs into the leg side. He dabs it through square leg with soft hands and steals a second 2 runs
16.3 4 Kumar to Jadeja three in three! This is overpitched and down leg side. Stays tall and allows it on, tickles it fine FOUR

He calls long-off into the circle. Fine leg goes back.

16.2 4 Kumar to Jadeja past short fine. Short and at the hips from Bhuvi and that is pressure straight away on him. Boundaries off the first two balls. Easily swiped away FOUR
16.1 4 Kumar to Jadeja inside edge past Bairstow. Short and cramped him at the mid-riff. Looks for the pull and gets lucky FOUR

Right, Dhoni has backed himself and his team to get nearly 20 an over against SRH’s seamers. It’s the right IPL to be achieving those kind of numbers in the last four overs. But it’s still in improbable territory. Bhuvi is in.

End of Over No.16 Chennai Super Kings 87/4 Last Over (8 runs)

Vv: “CSK is packing their side with 11 people who can theoretically bat is more an admission of nobody in form than of aggression. What use are your hitters down the order if your top and middle order play like this”

15.6 0 Rashid Khan to Dhoni full and just outside off, leans in and watchfully taps it back to the bowler no run
15.5 0 Rashid Khan to Dhoni good length at off stump, defended off the back foot no run
15.4 4 Rashid Khan to Dhoni can’t stop this. Short and at leg stump, pulled firmly to Natarajan’s left again, and this time he’s not close to it FOUR
15.3 2 Rashid Khan to Dhoni dropped short at middle stump, pulled firmly to deep backward square’s left. Natarajan is scambling and sprinting and huffing to his left. And he has some fortune as this slams into his leg as he runs for it 2 runs
15.2 1 Rashid Khan to Jadeja pinned him deep in the crease and the lbw appeal is turned down. Warner reluctantly reviews. Good length, middle and leg it appeared to pitch. Turning into Jadeja who is struck in front of leg stump trying to flick. Ball tracking has the pitching outside leg. The review is lost. 1 leg bye
